A love-hate relationship with ‘Fall Guys’

Fall Guys follows cute, colorful characters through a variety of challenges on different maps. Players can enjoy the game on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, and most Xbox consoles.

‘Fall Guys,’ formerly known as Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, is a platform battle royale game developed by Mediatonic and published by Epic Games. It is playable on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Xbox Series X and S. It was originally released Aug. 4, 2020, and was released free on June 21, 2022.

‘Fall Guys’ has 67 maps for players to explore, which are broken down into 26 race maps, eight survival maps, two logic maps, nine hunt maps, 12 team maps, one “invisibeans” map and nine finals maps. You will receive a variety of these randomized maps, each with a different objective.

In a race the objective is to get to the finish line as fast as possible. In survival a player must survive as long as possible by means of jumping, standing, or pushing. Often players will need to avoid goo, falling, and other obstacles. In logic maps like The Puzzle, players must step on tiles to recreate a given picture as quickly as possible.

Team maps are like the other maps, but you must complete the challenge with team members.

Invisibeans is a map where everyone is invisible except one player. In simplest terms, the visible player plays tag with everyone and everyone else must move blocks to a goal without being seen.

Finally, the final maps are extremely similar to the previous maps, excluding the race map and the Invisibeans maps.

This is an incredibly fun game, though frustrating at times, but it is even more fun when you play with friends. You can play with others on the same platform or even across different platforms.

For me, one thing about the game that makes me love and hate it at the same time is that all the fall guys have physics you can “rub.” After all, rubbing is racing. You can even grab other players. There is a potential for pushing others off, grabbing a player just before a jump and a lot more devious things to do. This is a game show, so playing dirty is legal. This games can make you the happiest person who ever lived…if you win…but can also make you want to chuck your device out the window.

Within this game you are a little blobby fall guy. They are not the most athletic characters in the world but they are cute. In this world you can unlock and customize every thing about about your character’s suit. Your top, bottom, face, hat, colors, patterns can be changed, and there are even outfits you can find, though they are rare. These include a football, a hot dog and even even characters like SpongeBob or Naruto.  There are also seasonal events to get exclusive skins. Maps-wise there are 60 maps pre-made for world-wide games, but there are also hundreds of maps being made by the public for the public every day.

Yes, you read that correctly. There is a world editor fit with tiles, jump pads, breakable walls, fans, hammers and much more for world-builders to create their own maps. Eat your heart out, Minecraft.

I give this 10/10 kudos…when I win.
