State Fair Lures Tastebuds With Fresh, Offbeat Eats

State Fair Serves Up Daring New Tastes Next to Time-Honored Favorites

Every year, the Oklahoma State Fair turns the Oklahoma City fairgrounds into a two-week festival of rides, games, and a menu of foods that keeps growing. People come from all over the state to try the fair's signature snacks, and organizers keep pushing the envelope with experimental, unusual, and brand-new creations while still paying tribute to the dependable classics. Reporter Hannah Tichenor tasted a blend of the familiar and the more unusual options.

Strawberry Crunch Cheesecake Bites: 7/10

Traditional cheesecake cubes are topped with a strawberry sauce drizzle and rolled in crushed freeze-dried strawberries. Two were bought, but only one got eaten because the cheesecake turned out so sweet and rich. Beyond that, they were tasty and cost only $4 for the two.

Turkey Leg: 5/10

The turkey leg came in as the least favorite fair food tasted. It was dry, chewy, and greasy; only the outside layer was notably good, and the deeper toward the center it went, the worse it got. At $16, it was the priciest item sampled.

Funnel Cake: 8/10

This marked a first-ever funnel cake experience. Priced at $10, it was fluffy, light, sweet, warm, and made fresh. The stand had run out of utensils and napkins, but a napkin was tracked down, which turned out to be essential given the heavy dusting of powdered sugar on top.

Candied Watermelon: 10/10

The candied watermelon was a clear favorite: a watermelon slice wrapped in Fruit by the Foot, dipped in chamoy, and sprinkled with tajin. It was refreshing and packed with flavor. The drawback was that it was messy and hard to eat because of the chamoy and the thin wooden stick it came on. At $8 it was slightly pricey, but worth every penny.

Pickle Lemonade: 7/10

Senior Becca Jolly bought this pickle lemonade. For $14, it included lemonade, a pickle, a dill garnish, and sugar on the rim. It tasted like ordinary lemonade, so overall it was fine but overpriced. "The only good thing about the lemonade was that it had a full-size pickle with it," Jolly said.

This was the first year really sampling fair food, but the plan is to grab at least one snack every year from here on. Trying new things is a genuine joy, and the fair is a great spot for it.
