The Oklahoma State Fair is a two-week event held on the Oklahoma City fairgrounds with rides, games and a variety of different foods. Every year people come from all over Oklahoma just to get a taste of the iconic snacks that the fair offers.
There are foods that the fair has every year, and there are foods that are experimental, weird or new. Each year the fair aims to top the year before with unique and interesting snacks, while keeping the classics. This year, I tried a sampling of the staples and the weirder foods.
Strawberry Crunch Cheesecake Bites: 7/10
These are classic cheesecake cubes drizzled in strawberry sauce and dipped in crushed freeze-dried strawberries. I bought two, but I only ate one because of how sweet and rich the cheesecake was. Other than that, they were good, and only cost me $4 for both.
Turkey leg: 5/10
The turkey leg was my least favorite fair food that I tried. It was dry, chewy, and greasy. To me only the outside layer was very good and the closer to the center the worse it got. It cost $16, which was the most expensive fair food that I had.
Funnel cake: 8/10
I had never had funnel cake before going to the fair this year. It was $10, and fluffy, light, sweet, warm and freshly made. The stand had run out of utensils and napkins, but I was able to get a napkin, which was a lifesaver when it came to the powdered sugar that was dumped on top.
Candied Watermelon: 10/10
I absolutely loved the candied watermelon. It was a slice of watermelon, wrapped in a Fruit by the Foot, dipped in chamoy, and sprinkled with tajin. It was very refreshing and flavorful. The downside was that it was messy and difficult to eat because of the chamoy and the fact it was served on a thin wooden stick. It was a little expensive, being $8, but to me it was worth every penny.
Pickle Lemonade: 7/10
Senior Becca Jolly bought this pickle lemonade. For $14, it came with lemonade, a pickle, dill garnish, and sugar on the rim. It tasted like regular lemonade, so overall it was okay, but overpriced. “The only good thing about the lemonade was that it had a full-size pickle with it,” Jolly said.
This year was my first year really getting any food from the fair, but I plan on getting at least one snack every year from now on. I really enjoy trying new things, and the fair is a great place to do that.
