Director Lawrence Lamont is helped alongside Syreeta Singleton ,screenplay writer of the popular show Insecure The two art directors paired up to orchestrate a comedy movie based upon friendship, love, community, determination and trying to get the rent money to your landlord by the 1.
“One of Them Days” features Keke Palmer and SZA playing two best friends, Dreux and Alyssa, who are trying to navigate their friendship while struggling financially and attempting to avoid eviction.
This movie has the typical young adult comedy duo: two best friends/roommates struggling to maneuver life and live comfortably while managing hard relationships and hoping to make it big in life.
“One of Them Days” features multiple famous and well-known Black movie stars, including Kat Williams, who plays a friendly homeless man known in their community, Janelle James plays a blood doctor that helps Dreux make a little pocket money and Lil Rey Howery plays a con artist who scams them out of $1,000.
Each uniquely hilarious character plays a major role in Dreux and Alyssas’ adventure to come up with their rent money.
The main plot of the movie begins as Alyssas boyfriend, Keshawn (Joshua David Neal) runs off with their rent money and tries to start a clothing brand.
Dreux and Alyssa then make up multiple plans to come up with $1,500 by 6 p.m. to pay their rent or they will be evicted. Each plan is crazier and more disastrous than before. They have this “can’t be messed with” dynamic leading them to thrilling and risky events that overall leave them exactly where they need to be.
Dreux is a very determined and punctual person, believing there always must be a plan in hand to succeed, as Alyssa is considered a free spirit who believes the universe will always figure out a path for both. These contrasting beliefs cause these best friends to bump heads during some of the more difficult times.
In the end, friendship and determination overpower all and Dreux and Alyssa succeed despite all their trials and tribulations, once more proving the main theme of the movie: friendship conquers all.
Overall, I give this movie a 10/10. Each character plays their role amazingly and effortlessly, everyone has an undeniable dynamic with each other, making the movie flow comfortably. Not to mention the countless hilarious scenes and characters, making the movie unique and a fun watch.
