HCP’s new Library Media Specialist, Gayle Ooten, is no stranger to fresh starts. From growing up in New Jersey to making a significant career switch, Ooten has embraced her new beginnings throughout her life.
Before transferring to Harding, Ooten spent almost a decade working in environmental labs in Northwest OKC with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha.
“I did microscopy, and they tested places for asbestos, lead and mold,” she said.
However, working in labs Ooten decided to pursue a new passion: library sciences. She got her master’s degree in library sciences from the University of Oklahoma and went on to work at a Deer Creek Elementary School as their librarian in 2021.
“I loved all my students at the elementary school, but the younger kids just weren’t for me,” Ooten said. “I’d much rather be in a high school setting.”
She likes the freedom that comes with working in a high school versus an elementary school.
Outside of work, Ooten’s creative talents extend far beyond the library, where she explores her love of art, a passion she had developed early on in her life.
“I took a lot of art classes in school because it’s what I thought I would end up doing professionally.”
Now art is one of her favorite hobbies. Her favorite mediums to use are pencil and charcoal pieces. Lately, she has been experimenting with watercolors and painting lots of flowers.
In addition to her artistic pursuits, Ooten’s love for the arts takes a darker turn through her love of horror novels.
“My favorite books are the Harry Hole series,” she said. “They are like a combination of mystery and thrillers.”
Ooten also enjoys listening to music and playing video games in her free time. Her favorite band to listen to is Muse.
Within a short time, Ooten has already made an impact on the school’s community. She creates connections with her students by ensuring that the library remains a safe space for them.
