New librarian has tricks up sleeve
September 28, 2015
Kathleen Moore, Harding Charter Prep’s fresh new librarian, shares some facts about herself.
Q: What motivated you to come to Harding?
A: I have been a librarian for 27 years and was looking for a library job to be closer to my family. I have a daughter who is a meteorologist here on FOX, and she is fixing to have my first grandbaby, so I was looking for a job that would bring me to the Oklahoma City area. And so when I found Harding Prep’s opening, I applied for it and was very lucky and very fortunate to be hired here. I love it. Working in the library, to me, is the greatest job in the school. I enjoy helping the teachers and to be able to help with the curriculum and really encourage literacy and reading.
Q: Have you always enjoyed books?
A: Yes, one of the reasons that I wanted to become a librarian is that my mom took me to the library when I was little. I would go every two weeks and after a while she would tell me,”Don’t read the books in the car because you need to have something to read when you get home.” The love of libraries started then, and I just loved them ever since. I started teaching school and went to go get a master’s in library science because that was just where my heart was.
Q: Where are you originally from?
A: I was born and raised in Wichita Falls, Texas, but then I moved to the [Dallas] metroplex in 1990, and ended up in Allen, Texas. I was there for 20 years and was a librarian there. I was also the librarian at the Allen high school there, which is just the opposite of Harding because it has 3,200 kids from ninth, tenth and eleventh grades, and we had 1200 seniors. This, to me, is a dream. This is a dream school where I get to know everybody and get involved. So yes, I am a Texan.
Q: Do you have any other interests?
A: Yes. I like to walk, I like to hike, I like to travel. I love to travel. I have another daughter that lives in Raleigh, NC, so I go out there at least twice a year, and do all of the traveling around there.
Q: What, in your opinion, is the most interesting thing about you?
A: Let me show you this picture of David Copperfield. I was on stage with him, I was chosen to be on stage with him and I was in the front and there was a bunch of people in the back but he made me disappear. It was in Dallas. I can’t tell the secret because we got to go behind the scenes and he tells us to keep his secrets and give us this autographed picture. Yeah, it’s awesome. I also have a music degree, so I play the piano and the violin. I taught music for a year, at the middle school, but it just wasn’t my passion. Books are my passion. I like going to the symphonies and things like that, though.
Q: What is your favorite book?
A: My favorite book is “Teacher Man” by Frank McCourt.
