In order to relieve the school administration of some disciplinary tools, the school has added a new position, ISS coordinator, which is taught by newcomer Shaban Scott.
Scott leads ISS with empathy, not just rules. Scott sees potential in students, where other people might see trouble.
“Kids mess up and there’s more to their story than what meets the eye, ” he said.
He is passionate about connecting with students on a personal level, which he believes is essential for creating a positive learning environment, especially for those facing challenges. With a strong belief in second chances, Scott makes a significant impact in the classroom. He views ISS not as punishment, but as an opportunity for reflection and growth. He emphasizes the importance of treating others the way they want to be treated and strives to build positive relationships with his students.
Scott’s dedication extends beyond the classroom. He also coaches basketball and football. He said he sees sports as a great way for students to channel their energy and stay engaged.
Scott brings a wealth of experience to his role. After moving back to Kansas City in 2015, he began working with kids in before-and-after-school programs. He started a program called “From Babies to Gents,” which taught young boys essential life skills. This led to opportunities to work with middle school students, where he also started basketball and football teams.
His journey continued, and he eventually became a full-time teacher, even stepping into a substitute role in music and technology, areas he was familiar with due to his background in DJing.
“My inspiration for focusing on the youth period would most likely be my little brothers,” Scott said. “I’m the oldest of six siblings, and I naturally fell into a mentorship role, making sure they did the right thing.”
Scott finds working with students in ISS rewarding because it allows him to address and resolve issues before they escalate.
“Finding out what the problem is and helping students before they go down the wrong path is something I’m passionate about,” he said.
Outside of teaching, Scott enjoys basketball, football, DJing, cutting hair, working on cars and collecting shoes.
As for his goals, Scott is eager to establish a football team for the school.
“My biggest project right now is to get the football team together. Hopefully, by October or September, we can have a full team for next year.”
Scott said he is excited to be part of the school community and looks forward to getting to know his students better and contributing to their growth and success.
