A new year at Harding means new faces to meet. Whether it is a student or a teacher, Harding finds it a top priority to have all newcomers feel welcome.
This includes new faculty, such as Harding’s new choir teacher, J. Warren Mitchell. Mitchell has been teaching students music-centered classes for 15 years, since earning his Bachelor’s of Music Ed. from Auburn University and his master’s from Oklahoma City University.
Previously, Mitchell has taught at Harding Fine Arts. Ironically, Mitchel said teaching music was something he had never planned. He wanted to perform, but there were caveats from his mentors.
“It was a mistake,” Mitchell said. “I was cautioned about singing opera as a person of color. My voice started growing in ways I didn’t imagine.”
He gained support with his singing from fellow tenors who encouraged him to continue singing. Mitchel has performed for various local choirs and competitions. In addition, he has performed in other countries such as Germany and gained validation and respect through his success as a tenor in Europe.
Mitchel has found himself with the students at Harding, providing them with a classical music experience that encompasses Harding’s efforts to expand students’ minds. He describes Harding students to “understand higher level concepts” and “maintain high expectations” compared to other schools where he has previously taught. His goals are to bring the student body together through the passion of music and provide a sense of family among the students.
“Now the choir nerds have a place to belong,” Mitchell said.
