Enter the Deadpool
March 11, 2016
I’m totally a fan of superhero movies. Spider-Man has always been my favorite for many years, but after February 15, I switched quickly over to Deadpool.
I went with a couple of friends… the day after Valentine’s Day because we’re all single so it seemed like a good idea. I’ll admit to being a movie enthusiast so Deadpool was definitely on my list and I was really looking forward to seeing it.
In short, Deadpool is about a man named Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) who discovers he has cancer and the only way to treat it is to undergo a potentially deadly treatment. This treatment results in Wade developing a devastating mutation. He believes that it can be reversed so the movie spreads out his journey in trying to find the man who did it to him – Ajax (Ed Skrein). During this time, he’s trying to build up the courage to reunite with a prostitute named Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), who he fell in love with pre-mutation. However, he also discovers that he has a gift, so he suits in some red tights and adapts the name Deadpool.
I do have an intense love for Ryan Reynolds. I especially loved his performance in The Proposal, which was totally a different genre of movie than Deadpool. I never got a chance to see him in Green Lantern, but I was aware of his extensive acting abilities and I wanted to see him in a different type of movie than the normal.
The other actors are rather new to me, but even so, the acting was great. Everything was real and it was easy to make emotional connections, especially with the relationship between Wade and Vanessa. I believe that when the actors have chemistry, the audience can also form chemistry with them and that makes the movie really feel real.
A couple of minutes into the intro credits, I was a little bit confused. None of the actors’ names were introduced directly, but instead they were introduced rather satirically named based on their descriptions from Deadpool’s perspective. From this point, I didn’t know what to expect but the longer I watched, the more I fell in love.
Deadpool was definitely different from other superhero movies. Deadpool himself was constantly willing to break the fourth wall and give his own snarky opinion on the situation at hand. Along with this, he even gave his opinion on other superhero movies that were simply “failures.”
This is something that has never been done by other movies involving superheroes so it was definitely risky, but I loved it. It was well done and unique.
Overall, I loved the movie. I laughed so hard until I got a throbbing headache, but it was definitely worth it.
I am looking forward to the sequel to Deadpool and even the other future superhero movies that will follow after Deadpool’s risky example.
