Devin Veney has been hired as the new AP US History and AP US Government teacher and has so far made a positive impact among students and faculty.
Veney said that his childhood was unconventional from the average family. His parents split up when he was young and were both in the military, causing them to move a lot. He never had a solid set of friends during high school.
Because of his upbringing, Veney said being at HCP “is the first time in 10 years that I have felt at home.”
Veney is very passionate about teaching.
“Getting to see the light in someone’s eyes when they learn something for the first time, it is an amazing feeling,” Veney said.
Veney also commutes two hours home and back every day.
“I believe it is worth it,” he said. “I did it for eight years in Tulsa; 30 minutes longer is no different.”
Veney has enjoyed getting to know and interact with the student body at HCP.
“I haven’t had any issues,” Veney said. “North Tulsa kids are way different from Oklahoma City kids. It’s not so much of a field day here, not as much low income here, not as many issues with gang violence, and they seem eager to learn.”
He hopes to teach history in a way students may have never encountered before and is glad HCP has given him a pathway to do so. He plans on teaching the truth behind US history and government as a way to engage students.
“He is very open, very inclusive and tries to have fun with his class,” said junior Tristan Evans.
Veney hopes to use his experience teaching at HCP as a method of growth.
“I do not have any regrets in life. I think everything in life is a lesson, it brought me to where I am as a person,” he said.

What I mean by “a field day” is that it is not so much of a “free for all” with academics and there is an actual premise and standard in which this school follows for guidance with academic progression and success for all students, not just singular groupings. Harding to me, sets the standard on education and I am more than blessed to be a part of the educators in the classrooms here. I love this place!!!!
