Basketball makes school history
December 10, 2014
The girls and boys basketball teams competed at the Minco Classic Tournament this past weekend. The boys dominated tournament and the girls came up short of medaling.
The girls were seeded fourth and placed fourth.
Sophomore Payton Langley was disappointed with the results from the tournament.
“It was depressing because we had not lost yet, everyone was pretty sad and we got yelled at by coach and we had not gotten yelled at yet this season,” Langley said.
Athletic director Mylo Miller was also upset with the girls’ results but still had a positive attitude.
“The girls are 7-2 overall and they are still doing really well and winning a lot of games,” Miller said. “There is a lot of youth for the future, so that is promising.”
Langley was pleased that the girls used the tournament as a learning experience.
“We came out stronger [after the loss] than we have before and we had more will to win after that,” Langley said. “But we still need to work on becoming more of a team rather than individuals and that means talking more on and off the court.”
The boys made school history by winning the tournament.
Senior Bryan Jones was excited with how the boys performed at the tournament.
“We played excellent and won every game by at least 30 points, so I think that we did pretty well,” Jones said. “I feel ecstatic and I am ready to see the picture of us in the trophy case.”
Miller is also ecstatic with the boys’ performance at the tournament.
“This was the first regular season tournament that the boys have ever won,” Miller said. “It is awesome.”
The boys averaged about 89 points per game and now have the impressive season record of 9-0.
Jones is pleased with how the team has developed this year.
“This is my second year to play,” Jones said. “Our freshmen got older and we [the seniors] were able to take a different role, which allowed us to improve and our team chemistry got better.”
Miller is pleased with how the boys have performed this year and is excited to continue to see improvement.
“They are breaking new barriers and accomplishing bigger and higher goals,” Miller said. “They are also ranked in the top 20 and they are undefeated, so they are doing really well.”
Jones is optimistic about how the team will continue to perform for the rest of the season.
“I think that we will continue to go undefeated until the twelfth or thirteenth game,” Jones said. “After Christmas break there is usually a drop off, but hopefully not and we can keep the winning streak going and make it last.”
