Baseball starts season off strong

The baseball team has started off to a slow but good season.

Senior Carus Newman is pleased with how the boys have performed starting off the season.

“I think that we are doing all right, but it’s different right now since we have a lot of players and we have only had two games so we haven’t gotten a feel for what we have, but we should be all right coming up,” Newman said.

The baseball team received a new coach this year which has been a big change for them.

“He (Coach Savage) is interesting and not really like Hixon that’s for sure,” Newman said. “He’s more focused on making sure that we get the little things right and he gets on you a lot for the things that he knows you should do well which makes us better.”

Senior Kyle Davis agrees with Newman about the coaching change.

“Coach Savage is different than Hixon with the way he approaches game days and practice,” Davis said. “He seems more serious about the game compared to Hixon because Hixon would laugh and have fun, but he loves the game.”

Earlier this week the team played against John Marshall and won 10-2 with Varsity, and 5-4 with Junior Varsity.

Despite their success for the season so far, Newman knows that the team can make some improvements.

“Hitting is something that we need to improve on,” Newman said. “We didn’t hit that well the first game and that’s where we need progress and when we get through the season we will get better.”

Athletic director Mylo Miller is happy with how the boys are performing.

“They are doing very well,” Miller said. “Our spring sports have started off strong.”

The next baseball game is Friday, April 3 against SW Covenant at Union City.
