Basketball kicks off the season with multiple wins
November 22, 2016
The basketball team has run miles and miles during conditioning practices in order to prepare for this season. With the loss of some starters from last year and the addition of some new players, both teams have been completely revamped.
The season kicked off with a game against ASTEC November 4. This game resulted in a win for the boys with a score of 67-42. The girls won with a score of 55-25.
Starting point guard Devin Cubit came from Midwest City to Harding because of the academics. Basketball just happened to be a plus.
Cubit favors the coaching under Wade Wallace compared to his past coaching.
“[Wallace] really works hard. He takes time to put in effort for us and to make us better. I’m happy to be here,” Cubit said.
There has been trouble with the new players keeping their grades up so they can actually play.
“[Cubit] has been a great addition to our team. Hopefully, he can continue to stay eligible and see his role increase,” Wallace said.
Overall for the start of the season, Wallace believes that it could be better.
“They’re still learning, still growing together. We still haven’t played with our entire team yet so they’re still feeling each other out and playing positions they’re not used to playing,” Wallace said.
The goal for the boys this season is win the state ring and grow to play better each day. As for the girls, their goal is to do perform better than last year as well.
Senior Payton Langley believes that the goal for the girls is similar to that of the boys.
“We had pre-season games and conditioning. We were all just working towards the same goal to get better. We want to do better than last season,” Langley said.
Progress is very important to both teams.
“We just want to work hard. We want to strive for the process and that’s it,” Wallace said. “That’s our goal. We just try to better than we were the day before.
Along with that, they all are keeping the state ring in view.
“We have prepared a lot to get this moment and to win the state ring,” Cubit said.
