Starting a new school year comes with attending fall sports. The cross country and volleyball teams are off to a fresh start for the new season.

Athletic Director Joe Hughes is pleased with the performance so far by the volleyball team. “We have a very small team, about 12 players so they are really working together because everyone will play for junior varsity and also varsity,” he said.

Working as a team is a top priority for the volleyball team. Though the record is 3-8 this season so far, Hughes sees potential in the team.

“We are definitely developing so I wouldn’t say it’s good or bad we’re just preparing for Regionals coming up at the end of September,” he said.

We are preparing for Regionals coming up at the end of September. There is a lot of cohesiveness with the team starting with our two seniors, Brandi Dean and Rachel Newman and it kind of trickles down from there,” Hughes said.

Sophomore Cooper Phillips commented on the unity of HCP Cross Country athletes this season. “The season is going great. We have a lot of  great runners and I feel like we’ve grown as a team a lot this year,” he said.

The Cross Country team won the Guthrie Cotton Flats meet in August. Tyler McLaughlin finished 3rd overall, Nathan Veal finished 4th overall, Tyler Gutel finished 10th overall,
Phillips finished 11th overall, Hannah Wilkes-Ball finished 15th and Gabrielle Jones finished 18th overall.

The Volleyball team has a game on Sept. 21 at 5:00 p.m. and Cross country has a meet on Sept. 23 in Tulsa.
