Junior year is the time to start preparing for which college a student wants to attend. Decisions need to be made, and the counselors are here to help students narrow their search and get their resume in order.
“Take the ACT. Take the SAT for Ivy League schools, and join organizations where a student can find leadership roles,” said counselor Linda Marshall.
Junior year is also the year to start visiting colleges. Each student is allowed two college visits in their second semester of junior year, Marshall said. She also suggests taking the student’s parents with them to colleges that they are most interested in because the parent’s opinion matters as well.
“Start to think about what you want in terms of size for a school,” said Capstone teacher Elizabeth Silver.
In addition to making important college visits, now is the time for juniors to get their activities in order. Colleges look at more than just grades when going through the admissions process.
“Build up your extra-curriculars because colleges like to see commitment. They also make you a well-rounded person and help build life experience,” said teacher Kelli Taylor.
Valedictorian Rachel Wood suggests students take the SAT and ACT and to keep improving their grades.
Taylor suggests exploring schools outside of Oklahoma because there are a lot of opportunities that students may not know about if they limit their search to just state schools.
Silver suggests juniors should keep taking the ACT and to constantly improve their GPA by raising their grades.
“It is not too late to make improvements,” Silver said.
