HCP clubs start meeting for a new year of activities
August 30, 2016
Harding Charter Prep offers many clubs and student organizations to fill time that is not spent doing homework. From athletic to academic, there’s something for everyone.
Academic Team is coached by Joshua Higginbotham, who called it a “sport for the brain.” The team practices in his room in the cafeteria on Mondays and competes in meets on the weekends.
Chess Club meets on Wednesdays after school in the cafeteria. The group is sponsored by Tom Kindinger.
Book Club meets on the last Thursday of every month. They meet in room 207 across from the media center. “It’s a safe place for readers to get a break from any kind of stress they encounter in school, their social life and at home,” said president Lydia Sharpe.
Gay-Straight Alliance meets every Tuesday after school in Emma Smerker’s room. President Natia Lewchuk described it as “a safe space for queer kids and allies to hang out and make friends but also a learning environment. Basically, it’s a space where you can meet people like you and if you see someone in the hall that you know from GSA you know ‘that’s a person I know is on my side and that I know I can trust.'”
Ping Pong Club meets every Wednesday from 3:10-4:15PM. It is sponsored by Kindinger and meets in the cafeteria.
Sci-Fi Club meets every Friday in the media center. President Lydia Shape called it “a place where ‘nerds’ can go to express themselves and have fun with other ‘nerds.'”
Math Tutoring Club is a student-led club where tutors can help their fellow students improve their math skills. The club meets in room 310 on Mondays, room 306 on Tuesdays and Thursdays and room 313 on Wednesdays. Algebra II teacher Dr. Michael Lewchuk said the club will help students “understand mathematics better, get better grades, and get less grief from their parental units.”
STEM club focuses on science, technology, engineering and math. They plan to meet on Thursdays at 3:15PM in room 317.
E-Sports and Gaming Club will meet every Monday in room 306 to play video games.
World Language Club will meet twice a month on Thursdays after school in room 308. “We do fun things that are related to explore different expressions of culture,” said club sponsor Michael Kraus.
Key Club meets every first Wednesday of the month in the cafeteria. They perform acts of community service around the city.
