Tony Weigelt, an exchange student from Dresden, Saxony, a town in eastern Germany, is joining the school for his junior year.
“It’s way different here,” Weigelt said. “Everything is bigger and there’s more of it and it’s also freer; it’s just American.”
Traveling abroad can present certain challenges, but leaving home for months is a task many students are not up for. Weigelt felt the strain at first, but said he has settled into his new American lifestyle.
“I was nervous before, going to school and meeting my host family but now it just feels fun,” Weigelt said.
So far, Weigelt’s favorite class at is pre-calculus. He enjoys Ted Hartley’s class because he is “easy to understand and very uncomplicated.”
Being a smaller school can have some advantages, and Weigelt said he likes the size of HCP for social purposes.
“It’s not that big, so you can actually get to know some people,” he said.
Weigelt plays American football here with the Oklahoma Patriots. He enjoys the relationships and friendships he has made on the team.
