Spring Break 2017

Another quarter of the school year has passed, and it is finally time for Spring Break 2017. While some have been counting down the days until they leave for vacation, there are plenty of fun and interesting things to do for those who are keeping it local this spring.

1.) Live on the Plaza – March 10

There will be an artwalk in the Plaza District today. Kick off your spring break listening to live music while viewing pieces from local artists along the 1700 block of NW 16th Street. The Plaza District puts on an artwalk every second Friday of each month from 6-10 p.m.

2.) Metro Mini Con – March 11

For those interested in anime or manga, the Belle Isle Metropolitan Library is having a mini con. Come dressed up in cosplay in order to participate in the costume contest. There will be crafts and games as well as the ability to hang out and watch some anime with friends. The event will be from 1-4 p.m. in rooms A,B and C.

3.) OKC Improv Class for Teens – March 12

Head to the Metropolitan Library in downtown OKC to learn to perform comedy scenes. The class includes improv games that will help participants feel more comfortable with improvisation skills within comedic scenes. The class will be held in the 46th Star Room from 2-3 p.m.

4.) The Oklahoma City Museum of Art

The Oklahoma City Museum of Art is open Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sundays 12 p.m.-5 p.m. Admission for children ages 6-18 is $10 and $12 for adults. Current short-term exhibitions this spring include The Unsettled Lens, a collection of photographs from the 20th century up to the year 2000 that depict the enigma of the mind, and After the Floating World which features carvings on woodblocks, a popular Japanese form of art. Both of these exhibitions last until May 14. There are other more long-term exhibitions featured as well.

5.) Splash Break at Jenks – March 13-17

Take a trip down to the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks for some ocean exploring! Open year-round from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., admission for adults is $15.95 and $11.95 for children. There are thousands of animals to observe in over 100 exhibits. This includes feeding the turtles, petting the stingrays and walking under the shark tunnel. Best of all, the new sea turtle exhibit is now officially open to the public, so make sure to catch a glimpse of the Sea Turtle Experience this spring!

6.) Museum of Osteology

The Museum of Osteology is the first of it’s kind in the entire nation, with only one similar museum in Orlando, Florida. With over 300 skeletons on display gathered from all over the world, this museum provides for an interesting and informative trip to Norman for a local spring break activity. Admissions for ages 13 and up are $8.00, children 3-12 get in at $7 and children below the age of 3 get in free.

7.) Three Sisters Spring Celebration – March 13-18

This event takes place at the Chickasaw Cultural Center in Sulphur, OK. Named after the intercropping system, Three Sisters is a celebration paying recognition to the horticulture of Native Americans during the 17th century. Participants will be able to engage in gardening, language lessons, stomp dance and play  traditional games. There will be cultural demonstrations in the Living Village.

8.) Martin Nature Park

Open everyday from 5 a.m.-6 p.m., Martin Nature Park is the perfect place to go on hikes with friends or family and learn about the nature and environment of Oklahoma City. Along the trails are some great places to observe nature along a creek or view different birds native to the area. They also provide guided hikes for those with interest about wildlife in the park. This makes for an engaging day for people of all ages!

9.) Lake Hefner

Lake Hefner is a popular place for people throughout the Oklahoma City area to visit. It’s a local favorite for sailing, and it has a fun park for kids to play on as well. The park features nice trails for walking and biking around the lake.

10.)  Riversport Adventures – March 11-19

Head down to Riversport Adventure Park in the boathouse district for a week of fun. Experience zip lining, whitewater rafting, tubing, kayaking and more this spring. Riversport provides sailing lessons at Lake Hefner and zip lining at Lake Overholser. They’re also giving out prizes all week, such as Free Sky Zip passes! Visit the link below to find out how to win.
