With the start of a new school year, HCP has enforced some new rules for students, leaving returning students in shock.
With the school year starting and a lot of new students attending HCP, some new strict rules are now being set in place to keep the students out of trouble. A lot of the new rules have the seniors and Juniors in shock.
Some of the new major rules being set in place have been strictly on uniform since the new school year started. This school year has stricter and enforced rules dealing with dress codes as the main thing that has affected the school. Here are some of the major effects for our school this year.
To go up a grade in high school, students need to show that they are doing well in school and in class. If a student misses more than 15% of their classes, excused or unexcused, they may be required to repeat the grade, and the School Attendance Committee gets to decide at the end of the year.
For 9th, 10th, and 11th graders, failing four semester courses (two credits) in a school year will result in the student being required to attend summer school. At summer school, the student will have to pass at least two semester courses (one credit) in order to proceed to the next grade. Summer school comes at a cost, as it is not free to students.
If a parent or guardian does not approve of a student being held back, they can appeal according to the Parent Complaint Policy of the school policy manual.
HCP principal Joe Hughes thinks the new policies on 9-12 promotion and retention policy guarantees clearly-established academic expectations through stress on grades and attendance. It also holds students accountable, helps those in need through retention or summer school and ensures fairness by invoking the use of the School Attendance Committee and facilitating guardian participation.
Another one of our major changes is the dress code for this school year. The new uniform policy not permitting skirts this year and allowing untucked shirts is to provide a uniform look to students. Excluding skirts simplifies the dress code, and students can easily adhere to uniform policies. Allowing untucked shirts provides freedom that offers choice to the students, making them feel more comfortable during the school day. This policy ensures a dense learning atmosphere where the students can study and socialize freely without fear of dress code.
