On February 10, students at HCP participated in a walkout to protest actions associated with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The demonstration lasted approximately from 12:42 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. and students aimed to raise awareness about immigration issues affecting families in the community.
Sophomore Keegan Maston participated in the walkout and shared their perspective on why they chose to interact.
“I believe the protest was necessary because the presence of I.C.E. is too strong in our city for all the wrong reasons,” Maston said.
The students who participated gathered outside the school, holding signs and chanting in support of immigrant communities. For them, it was an opportunity to speak up about issues they believe affect people in their community.
The students’ goal was to bring awareness about immigration issues. They hoped their actions would bring attention to concerns about policies and the impact of immigration enforcement on families.
Other students chose not to participate and remained in class. Some said that they supported the cause but thought it was better to stay in school.
