I’ve been a fan of Drake for years, since the “Kiki Do you Love Me?” challenge in 2018. His versatile music style keeps his fan base interested and awaiting all of his new music.
Since the release of his last album “Her Loss,” fans including myself have been waiting for a new album to be released.
“Away From Home” is a song from his newest album “For All the Dogs” where he talks about his growth from being a young adult sleeping in cars to where he is now: the 6th wealthiest rapper in the world.
My favorite song from his new album is “Away from Home” for several reasons. Drake isn’t just rapping random lyrics trying to rhyme, he’s telling a story. The way he is rapping in his song provides the listeners with imagery. You can hear a calm tone in some parts of the song and a more aggressive tone in others, really giving his listeners a chance to experience what he felt in those times. His expressive and passionate voice gives you a feeling no other story can give, it’s almost like you were there with him through everything.
The first verse talks about him sleeping in cars trying to funnel his first heartbreak, attempting to turn his despair into determination and drive to continue his music career.
He then reminisces on his life before the money and fame. He talks about the times with his friends and family, relationships, and how those people have inspired him. He felt at home during this time. He got comfortable with the rise to fame, and he enjoyed the challenge it took to try to start a music career and get somewhere with his life.
The first half of the song is rapped with a lot of emotions, you can almost feel the aggression and anger he felt as a young adult trying to start his career.
For the rest of the song, he talks about his rise to fame. He mentions how things “used to mean more” and how he doesn’t feel at home, he just feels like “walls, doors and floors only he could afford.”
When he is saying this verse, it’s rapped with a calmer, more content voice than the rest of the song. He doesn’t feel like himself, he doesn’t know what he wants next for himself. He has everything he ever wanted. Now he feels like he doesn’t have anything he is working towards, no goal for himself. He missed the days before all the fame, he had the determination to get where he is now but now that he has made it, he doesn’t know what is next for himself. It’s as if he is running in circles because he doesn’t know how to move forward with his career.
He feels like he is losing himself and becoming someone different than he was before, almost like he’s attempting to run away from who he is becoming.
He references a lot of encounters he has had with other influential people in the music industry. He highlights the relationships he has made over the years and how the people he has met on his journey to fame and fortune are very important to him.
“Away From Home” is a tribute to all the people who stuck beside him throughout his journey.
I give “Away from Home” a 10/10. The lyrics, the beats and the flow of his music are intriguing it makes his music seem alive, which not a lot of artists can do in this generation, making his music, for me, one of a kind.
