Baseball strikes success

The baseball team had a mixed result at a double header against Classen SAS on April 15.

The boys lost the first game 6-7, though there were some spectacular plays early in the game. Juniors Calvin Serven, Garret Saunders, and James Williams all hit singles early, loading the bases. Senior Braden Yarbrough then hit a triple which brought the boys all way home. The boys took the lead at 3-0 at the top of the first inning.

In the second inning Serven hit a triple, Saunders hit a double, and Williams hit a single pushing the score ahead to 5-2 in the second inning.

However, as the game progressed, Classen SAS began to figure out how to stall the Eagles out. Missed catches and strike-outs caused the Eagles to fall at the top of the fifth inning.

Junior Carus Newman was upset with how the first game went.

“In the first game we were flat and we made little mistakes that should not have happened,” Newman said.

Baseball coach Justin Hixon made the boys turn around the way that the team was playing after the first game.

“They were playing lazy and they were not focused,” Hixon said. “They cannot win by just showing up; they needed to act like they wanted to be there and actually try by putting in effort in order to win.”

The second game went much better. The boys pulled together and took a charging lead on Classen and wound up on top with an 11-2 victory.

“We changed our attitudes and talked to Hixon and made the second game fiery,” Newman said. “We came out early and started hitting better, we had better pitches, and we played more aggressive on the defense which is something that we could have done better in the first game. We took it up a level.”

Hixon was pleased with how the team performed in the second game.

“They came out with a lot more focus and attention to detail,” Hixon said, “They just showed up in the first game and expected to win and they didn’t, but they actually put more effort into the second game which made them play better.”

Athletic director Mylo Miller is impressed with how the baseball team is doing so far despite their minor setback in the game against Classen.

“I think that the baseball team has done really well this year,” Miller said. “I think that part of it has to do with the fact that they have had to do more work which has led to more opportunities with Coach Hixon and allowed for the team to be successful.”
