The 121st Red River Rivalry has wrapped up, and the game had an unexpected result.
According to CBS Sports, Texas was the favorite at two and a half points going into the game, but the Sooners had a stellar start to the year, sitting at 5-0.
Meanwhile, the Longhorns had a bumpy and unpredicted start to the year at 3-2.
The Sooners Quarterback John Mateer, faced an injury to his throwing hand during the first quarter of the Auburn game, three weeks before The Red River Rivalry.
According to Sooner sports, he received surgery on the hand the following Wednesday and would miss the next game vs. Kent State on Oct. 4, one week before they would play Texas.
Fans were excited when they heard Mateer would start, but curious how the offense would perform.
The game got off to a slow start when the score at halftime was 6-3 with the Sooners leading. Mateer threw two ugly interceptions, but the defense stood their ground, allowing OU to keep their small lead.
The second half was all Texas as they had 20 unanswered points in the second half. Arch Manning had a passing touchdown and went one for two on field goals. The game was iced when Texas had a punt return for a touchdown that put the game at 6-20. Texas then scored another field to eventually end the game with a final score of 6-23.
The final stat line for Mateer was: 20/38, 202 passing yards, no touchdowns, and 3 interceptions.
The run offense was not efficient at all either, with a team average yards per carry of 1.6.
The Sooners still have a great record at 5-1, but will they be able to recover from this loss and get back on track to their exploding start?
