The Indiana Hoosiers have won the National Championship 27-21 against the Miami Hurricanes. Indiana completed one of the most historic seasons of all time with a record of 16-0, won the Big 10 Championship, won the Heisman award, and of course, won the championship.
Miami put up a great fight. They got of to a bad start, and ended up being down 10-0 at halftime, with not much offense going on at all, but the defense was holding their ground. They came out of halftime with a long rushing touchdown by Mark Fletcher Jr. to give their team hope, but Indiana would eventually match that with a blocked punt that would give them a touchdown.
They started going back and forth as the game went on, and held Indiana to a field goal with about 1 minute and 40 seconds left to have a game winning drive.
They were getting down the field comfortably, but would eventually lose the game by their quarterback, Carson Beck, throwing an interception that would allow Indiana to finish the game off in victory formation.
The Indiana Hoosiers have been absolutely remarkable since Coach Curt Cignetti took over the head coaching job back in November of 2023. Since his arrival, the record for the Hoosiers has been 27-2. Cignetti described this national title win as a “paradigm shift”, according to ESPN. He believes that they and to “adjust to the new world” to win this.
Many people are calling this the greatest turnaround in sports history. According to Statmuse, from 2000 to 2023, Indiana had a record of 119-181. The team had no 5 star players, but had one of the most experienced teams in all of college football. This does mean that they could lose a majority of their team, including their star quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, who recently declared for the NFL draft.
Their future will entirely rest on the shoulders of Curt Cignetti.
