Study Tips for Finals

Lily Waswo, Staff Reporter

December is often referred to as “the most wonderful time of year.” To some, it is the month of cold weather and Christmas. To students, however, it is also a month of stress, cramming for finals and jumping at any chance to raise their grades before it’s too late.

•Make a study schedule! Set aside 1-2 hours of studying per subject per night.

•Set alarms or reminders on your phone.

•While studying, turn off your phone. If you use your phone for music, put it on do not disturb or priority only mode. This way you can still listen to your music without getting distracted by messages or updates.

•Use colorful pens to write terms or notes. The bright colors often help visual learners to remember material by connecting the written information to the color.

•Make flashcards and use them to test yourself over a subject. You can use index cards, or create a Quizlet account and make virtual flashcards. This is incredibly helpful for vocabulary terms.

•Another key method for studying terms is repetition. Reviewing the same material at least twice, if not more is more effective than simply going over the material a single time.

•Test yourself over the material. This helps you get used to the phrasing of questions as well as testing your knowledge over the subject.

•Ask a teacher for help if you are struggling. Teachers have office hours for a reason, so don’t be afraid to take advantage of them.

•Remember to take a break during studying. A good way to do this is to take a 10 minute break for every 40 minutes of studying.

•Lastly, make sure you remember to take care of yourself! Don’t stress too much. Make sure you get plenty of sleep before testing. Staying up late to study is generally a bad idea. Last minute studying tends to lead to forgetting, the information is not often retained.
