Wallows introduced me to my favorite genre of music: Indie Rock.
On Feb. 16 the band released their first single in two years titled “Your Apartment.” I have been waiting for a new Wallows drop ever since their last album “Tell Me That It’s Over, ” which was released in March 2022.
The intro of the song filled me with so much joy. All Wallows’ songs are so unique; no other songs sound like theirs.
The lead vocalist, Dylan Minnette, sounded great, just as he does in every other song he sings in. His voice is literally made for this type of music, it fits in so well with the rest of the instrumentals of the song.
Speaking of instrumentals, the guitar, played by Braeden Lemasters, was so fun and drew me into the song. I feel like the unique sounds of the guitar are what makes this band’s music so amazing. The guitar always blends so nicely with the drumbeat, played by Cole Preston. All three members of the band sound so in sync.
One thing that makes Wallows’ songs unique is the fact that while the beat of their songs is always upbeat and fun, the actual words and meaning of the song will hit you like a truck.
For example, this song sounds like it would be fun to dance around to, but the song itself is about having a toxic relationship that you can’t walk away from.
“Wounds seem to open up with you, what am I supposed to do?”
My favorite part of the song is the chorus. The instrumentals get louder, and you can almost hear the anger that Minnette sings with. The way he enunciates the word “apartment” gave me actual chills.
“I wonder who’s been at your apartment.”
With this new single, the band also released a music video to go along with it!
The video starts with Dylan Minnette looking sad and angry in a dark room. Throughout the song, different kinds of lights shine on him, and you can see the silhouettes of Cole Preston and Braeden Lemasters.
Then during the second verse, he stands up reveals a set where the guitarist and drummer pop out. He then carries a chair around for a minute and continues to walk around.
Overall, the music video looks low- budget, but I think it goes with the whole meaning of the song. Obviously, the video won’t be super elaborate, it’s about being in a toxic relationship.
I really enjoyed this song and know it will be on replay for the next few days. Now I will be anxiously awaiting the band to release their new album.
I give Wallows’ “Your Apartment” 9/10 stars.
