SZA has been my favorite artist since fifth grade, when her most popular album “Ctrl” dropped in 2017. Her memorizing vocals and starry instrumentals in all her music is what keeps fans, including myself, hooked on all her music.

SZA’s last album, ‘SOS’ was released in Dec. 2022. Since then, fans have been awaiting new music from the artist.

Saturn’ was released on Feb.22. In this song, SZA expresses her feelings about the repeating cycle in her life and how she is ready to experience life in a new universe.

There are many reasons why I enjoyed ‘Saturn.’ Her ability to convey such deep and relatable lyrics onto a meditative and uplifting beat is something I really enjoyed about this song. She is trying to show her listeners how she is really feeling.

Story continues below advertisement

Verse one is her speaking out to the world, asking if there is another universe out there for her to get out of this repeating cycle of pain. She sings this part of the song in a very desperate and expressive tone, like she is begging to be taken out of this paradigm of pain.

The next part of the song is when the beat drops and the chorus begin. We are taken into a very melodic rhythm, followed by her starry vocals which completely changes the song’s tone.

In the beginning of the song, it is like she is pleading out to the world for something new but when the chorus begins it is almost like you are ascending. Her wishes have been answered and she is finally getting something new.

The post chorus is a more grounding melody, like she is being brought back into reality again. Once again, remembering she cannot be taken to a different planet to experience something new.

When the second verse begins, she again starts expressing her feelings about her repeating cycle in life. How everything “just seems so unfair” and that she deserves some type of reward for her hard work.

The song ends with the chorus, we hear that transcending tone in the song and her voice one more time before the song comes slowly to an end with the grounding tone of the post chorus.

SZA’s vocals and ability to express real and relatable lyrics on such meditative yet exciting beats is almost unmatched. Her music is an outlet for a lot of young people around the world, reminding everyone that they are not alone in their feelings.

I give ‘Saturn’ a 10/10.
