Students at Harding read literature ranging from “Great Expectations” to “Hamlet” for their English classes that take up much of their time, but some still manage to find time for reading books that they like outside of class.
According to goodreads.com, the most popular genres for teens are dystopian, paranormal, paranormal romance, science fiction and realistic fiction.
“I usually read science fiction like ‘Star Wars’ series or ‘Among the Enemy,’ but I also like the Steampunk sub-genre,” said junior Blake Bauer.
Senior Khala Crawford usually reads sci-fi or fantasy. “The ‘Chaos Walking’ series is the best thing ever. It’s by Patrick Ness, and right now I’m reading ‘Rot and Ruin’ by Jonathan Maberry,” Crawford said.
Freshman Amoree Wagner likes to read realistic fiction and fantasy. “I love reading Greek mythology as well,” she said.
Sophomore Tristan Dow likes to read sci-fi and fantasy, with historical fiction mixed in.
With all of the projects and other assignments students have to complete, it’s hard to find time to read for pleasure.
“I read at home, or whenever I can,” Wagner said.
For fans of “The Hunger Games” series by Suzanne Collins or “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card, the movies are out in theaters already. “Catching Fire” came out November 22, and “Ender’s Game” November 1. “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” comes out on December 13.
