After a week of teasing fans with posters strung about New York and Chicago, Indie-Rock band Wallows released their first project of 2025, “Your New Favorite Song.”
Each teaser poster was a bright orange color, matching the band members’ recent outfits and promotions for their upcoming Model & More tour.
Upon seeing the initial announcement, I was beyond excited to hear a new song from one of my favorite bands, hinting towards the potential for a new album. Naturally, I stayed up late and listened to the song the second it dropped.
I immediately fell in love with it within the first few chords. The initial switch from guitar strumming to drums and trumpet gave me chills.
The trumpet adds a slow and jazzy feel to the song which is a slight shift in tone from their last project “Model,” which was released last year.
The ending line of the first verse scratches an itch in my brain.
“So, I blocked it out with the song, and it went like…”
Dylan Minnette’s delivery of this line makes it impossible to not rewind. He effortlessly binds the first and second verses together pulling us deeper into the story he is telling.
My favorite part of the song is the bridge (what’s new?).
“Thought I heard a voice; thought I saw a face/
It was, but a noise gone without a trace.”
I feel like you can truly hear Minnette’s emotion throughout this entire verse. The faster pace brings a sense of anticipation, like the story being told will have a happy ending. Instead, the song turns to the outro, with soft high notes, almost like he is begging to see his past lover again.
“Will I hear it again? Will I see it again? Will I feel it again?”
After the release of the single, the band performed it live for Triple J. During this performance you can see the pain and longing Minnette is feeling as he sings. His vocals are absolutely outstanding.
In just six days, “Your New Favorite Song” has quite literally become my new favorite song. I can’t wait to see what their next project brings!
